CHAPTER EIGHT

The Difference a Dad Makes

IT TAKES A MAN TO RAISE A MAN. And just as mothers should listen to their intuition, fathers should listen to their sons. If they did, the conversation might go something like this.

“Hey, Jack, I’ll see you later. I’m going to a seminar now on how to be a better father to you!”

“Oh, that’s easy, dad. Just pound more nails with me.”

After the class, Jack’s father returned and announced, “The teacher told me I need to spend more time with you.”

“That’s what I said, dad, but you left anyway.”

If a boy is going to grow into a healthy man, he needs to have a dad who shows him how. Does this mean that a single mother cannot raise a man? No, but one thing is for sure. If a single mother’s son grows up to be a strong adult, chances are excellent that he has rubbed shoulders with a good man along the way.

Let’s take a look at the state of boys in the country with regard to their exposure to their fathers.

• Sixty-seven percent of children under the age of eighteen live with both parents and 27 percent live with one parent only (usually mom)1

• Sixty-seven percent of teens live with their biological father; 91 percent of teens live with their biological mother2

• Sixty-three percent of black children do not have their biological father at home; the same is true of 35 percent of Hispanic children and 28 percent of white children3

• Eighty percent of African American children can expect to spend at least a significant part of their childhood years living apart from their fathers4
